Well, in my country, the main universities are heavily subsidised by the government (actually, the main education system is heavily subsidised by the government). So the university education here is much cheaper than in the US.

Also there is our social culture where parents generally are very supportive of their children's education and will try very hard to support their kids through university. The flip side is that our culture also has this strong concept of filial piety, where people generally feel responsible for financially supporting their aged parents.

My impression of American society is that it isn't quite the same. There is much more emphasis on independence. Young people cut ties with their parents quite early, move out and seek to support themselves financially and build their own lives. Older folks are left on their own and normally don't expect, for instance, to live with their adult children anymore.
