You said you don't believe in God, but that you're concerned God or Angels will be aware of this and not help you with your travels. But also that you do believe in higher intelligence. Maybe you should just lose the terminology of "God" and "Angels" and stick with thinking about "higher intelligence" if you want guides on your journeys. Some people call Angels guides. Some think guides are components of our composite selves. It's easy to just seek out higher intelligence because we know that exists. There are millions of people out there who are smarter than us, or smarter in a different way.
As you work on Astral Projection, you don't have to expect to encounter other entities right away. If you do, approach them with curiosity, not complete trust in an angelic sense. Have questions you want to ask. See if they can take you anywhere. Never blindly trust a guide just because you've encountered them in a reality that seems "higher".
Concerning the white light, use your imagination. Imagine it around you throughout the day, as you fall to sleep. Make sure you're assigning it particular functions. Do you want it to attract positive energy? Keep out negative energy?
Also, don't worry too much. Remember, you can return to your body at any time. You are in control. Your mind belongs to you and you alone. You are only at risk of encountering higher aspects of your self, which can be wonderfully overwhelming.
