Yes, alcohol is a powerful drug that we perceive as something which is NOT a drug. Many people drink (take an alcoholic hit) to 'relax'.

Many people with alcohol dependence cannot socialize without drinking alcohol....it's like they need it to be able to have fun. That is a warning sign.

Stimulants aren't meant to be moderated. Think about it. The body adapts to the dose of alcohol and other drugs so the amount which you think is moderate is normally, over time, far too much. People start drinking the odd beer or glass of wine during the week, which leads to every night after work.
They end up consuming more and more 'to feel relaxed'.
This is addiction. Whether that sounds uncomfortable or crazy to people, it's the true measure of things.
