I live in the south and have driven the Interstates from N.O.L.A. through VA many times. Colors just turning - some yellow and fewer reds, still mostly green.
The interstate route - I-59, I-81 is quite repetitive - pine forests and low mountain ridges most of the 1000 miles. The one time I drove from Reno to D.C. I took the middle route through Utah, Denver, St. Louis, Louisville, Lexington, Charleston. The last part of that trip was spectacular scenically. The Utah, Wyoming and Colorado interesting as well but the Denver - St. Louis stretch - oh my goodness - try a few Jolts to keep your eyes open.
I recommend that route -I would definitely do it again (though I would use autopilot through Kansas.)
