The most effective form of discipline I've experienced is when it was backed by sound, grounded motivation that was partially positive and negative.. IE) I want to get healthy because I don't want to feel the pain and I do want to feel good. I'm a little mixed on whether positive or negative reinforcement is more effective, but for me somewhere in between did the trick - at least for awhile.
At times I've started with pure force feeling like I had to take the action, but ultimately I don't think it's what carried me through.
