When I proposed to my ex-wife I created a fancy voucher that entitled here to one engagement ring. It was put into a fancy envelope and held by a teddy bear in a flower basket.
It is easy to put some thought into ways of proposing without the ring, then go and choose one together (if having a ring is what your partner wants)
