be blunt and talk to him about it. If he hasn't picked up the subtle hints yet, subtlety is not going to work.
You can either not talk to him and continue the uncomfortable friendship, or you can talk to him and two things can happen, either he takes it well and you go on to have a great friendship or he takes it badly and the friendship is over.
