Love I don't think is really effective as a self defense tool.
For the simple reason that polarized darkworkers as mentioned don't have emotional empathy. Thus, they may logically understand that the other person is not reacting and must love them... but this doesn't have any emotional effect on them.
In this same vain, I think that a truly polarized lightworker would still be able to love their rapist... for the simple reason that they would be able to empathize with the above situation and realize that the dark worker simply can't feel the pain that they're causing in the other person.
I agree that empathy is a huge asset for lightworkers, however, something I've noticed is that darkworkers seem to have a very good intellectual understanding of drives and emotions... much more than highly developed lightworkers, because they can rely simply on their emotional understanding.
Additionally, if a lightworker is not highly polarized, they'll find it very hard to use negative emotions to create change in somebody, even if they think it is in everybody's best interest. Even a moderately polarized darkworker will have no trouble using negative emotions for personal gain.
In this case, I think I the best self defense method would be kick the assailant in the balls and run... while still having empathy and understanding they have a reason for doing what they did
