A great alternative (or supplement) to exercise is adopting an active lifestyle. Try martial arts, cycling, swimming, tennis, hiking, golf, rock climbing, volleyball, soccer, etc. until you find activities that you like. You are much more likely to keep up with something you enjoy than something that feels like a chore.
You should be active several days a week to really get the most out of it, so try a variety of activities. For example I like to hike, jog, mountain biking, and mixed-martial-arts sparring with my friends. Being outdoors also adds a lot of value to the "workout" for me. Be ambitious when looking for fun, active hobbies!
Another alternative is to exercise during times when you are normally sedentary. My parents have certain tv-shows they watch every night. I got them to put a couple of stationary bikes/treadmills/rowing machines infront of one of the TVs and they do an hour (they record their shows on their DVR -- or Tivo if you have one) of exercise 6 days a week now. Try and think of other things you can do in front of the TV: push-ups, situps, pullups, punching bag, squats, yoga, etc.
