None of those guys had the slightest faith in the
actual tenents and teachings of whatever religion they at times hijacked for political purposes. Every one of them performed atrocities that were not endorsed, permitted, or encouraged by the source documents and teachings of whatever religion they happened to associate with.
They twisted the tenets of their "religion" when it suited them, and took advantage of fundamentalists interpretations, but I don't believe for a minute that their core driver was anything but lust for power. Megalomania does not require god but will cynically use god or whatever else is useful at hand.
