I learned that through Sonia Choquette's book "Ask Your Guides". For me, it sets an intention to myself and the world that I'm writing this specifically to contact my guides. It's no guarantee that I'll get guides, but it hasn't failed me yet. It also sets a small intention to the paper I'm writing it on.
For me, I don't type it out because I get too distracted on the computer. I write my questions using a mechanical pencil, and receive the answers and write them down in pen. That way I can efficiently switch from being a "transmitter" to a "receiver" and vice versa. Also, I like having a written record I can refer to later.
