Oh yeah, I've had many similar occurances. In fact, I would say that in about 5 or 6 such instances in the last 3 years alone my intuition about people like this has been 100% correct. They have turned out to be con-artists, thieves, etc. although there was no indication of that at the time of my intuitive feeling. I only told a few people "There's something 'off' with this guy." and within a few months found out that there WAS something wrong.
I would definitely recommend trusting your gut on this, although I am unsure what it means in your case.
