I've never read anyone funnier than Christopher Moore! So raunchy, but somehow he gets away with it. Island of the Sequined Love Nun is pretty cute. (I'm sure he'd love to hear his books called cute.) I really like The Stupidest Angel a lot too. You might want to save that one for Christmas break though.

I understand Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wrote a book together, Good Omens. I've heard it's pretty funny, but I haven't read it YET.

If sci-fi, fantasy isn't your favorite (read some anyway), what do you like?
Have you read Jane Austen yet? They really are lightweight books. Just because they're "classics" doesn't mean they're deep or complicated or particularly thought provoking. Miss Austen meant for them to be ironic. I find them quite sweet and entertaining.

The thing is Bethie, I can only guess you're female, and I wouldn't recommend Jane Austen to a guy. I mean guys can read her if they want, but...well...you know, romance.

Speaking of which, last winter I needed some absorbing but easy reading for my beleaguered mind. I pulled a collection of Gothic romances off the shelf. (Books I loved when I was thirteen, so maybe I was just reminiscent). Still:
Jamaica Inn, Daphne du Maurier
Thunder Heights, Phyllis A. Whitney (In my mind I pictured all the characters in this story like cartoon characters. Have you ever seen Howl's Moving Castle?)
Mistress of Mellyn, Victoria Holt

If these are too girlie for you, try Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Nearly as raunchy as Moore (well maybe not that raunchy), but not meant to be quite as funny.

I actually read Interview with a Vampire, by Anne Rice, while I was working as a receptionist. Well the phones weren't real busy, but I didn't have any trouble keeping up with the story even with the interruptions.

My son read The Hobbit last year at school during their 20 minute reading period. He didn't much like having to put the book away when the bell rang, but he still got through it and enjoyed it, so you might try that.
