Have daily power pondering time
Have you ever been so busy with school or work that you simply forget about what is important in life? Too often during school I am focused getting my assignments done that I forget to enjoy my life experiences. Only later do I realize the simple, yet wonderful experiences in my life—a fabulous ice cream sandwich, a late-night phone call with a friend, or how far I have come in my ability to befriend others. Too often, I appreciate the blessings in my life retrospectively rather than concurrently.
While living ‘in the moment’ every minute of the day is challenging, I recommend simply choosing a time when you have ponder about life every day. For me, I now take a 12 minute walk to the subway when I go to my internship every day. Rather than worry about what I will do at the internship or about other trivial details, I think about things that matter in my life: good friends, relationships with relatives, or the incredible experiences I have already had while living in Thailand this summer. Time set aside to ponder the bigger, more important issues of life has made a world of difference for me.
Simply choose a time, perhaps when you are traveling to work or school, or right before you go to bed, to think about the most important people and issues in your life. Try it for 30 days and you will begin to be more satisfaction with life. Sometimes we just need a time to realize how far we have come. Seeing our progress and current opportunities helps us make plans to keep in that direction.
