Hi Kelly and welcome to the forum!
Echart Tolle in The Power of Now says when we become the silent witness to our mind we experience a sense of presence. He goes on to say that most people have become compulsive thinkers and this stops them from experiencing presence which is their connection to their higher selves and the divine.
Buddhists say that the reason we don't all experience enlightenment or dharma is because of attachment. This can be attachment to thoughts, people, money or objects.
