The clutter is a distraction, it's a huge project that you'll have to tackle some day. So as it gets bigger and bigger, in your mind you have a huge project to tackle, (cleaning out the clutter) and this project starts to fill your mind.
So instead of thinking of new paths to take, tackling your personal issues, this project of having to clean the clutter replaces it in your mind. If you clean it out, you'll have to confront what you were avoiding.
