Hummm, why should centralization be an improvement? In a fairly direct way, that approach has already been tried: socialism/communism. Given a choice between centralized economic control and free (or more free, there are always degrees) markets, people around the world have strongly chosen markets.
Also, profit is not the sole motivator of people who engage in business and commerce. At any open market, for instance, I see lots of artisans who express their values, creativity and sometimes spirituality through what they create and sell, whether jewelry, food, music, or visual art.
