Ego is that part of us that identifies with something that isn't our true essence. Such as one identifying with gender, physical body, objects, possessions, etc. Its this ego mind and way of thinking that most people are ruled or controlled by. Just take a look at the news or the behavior of our politicians and you will see where the ego mind is in control. Enlightenment, reconnecting with the divine essence requires one to be aware of one's ego mind and to learn to control it. If you are interested, I wrote about this in "Mind And Ego" at
