And it's true - I don't really know anything about gaining or maintaining the respect of others. Since I don't think that it's going to just "come" to me without any effort on my part (Re: "What are the odds of becoming a black belt overnight" - SP) I'd like to get some input from others.

People only respect those who respect themselves.
Self respect comes from loving yourself, not putting up with too much crap from others, living a principle centered life. Without one of those things in place you will lose out on a lot of self respect for yourself.
