I think you have to follow your intuition on this. I've had precognitive dreams that proved themselves out, and others the felt the same where I've yet to find out. But for me they have a very distinct "flavor" to them, regardless of their substance.
Rather than understanding exactly what it is, I think it's more important to understand why it was important for me to see/experience this at the present time. Even a precognitive dream might be shown to you for a very different reason than you might suspect. When I have a dream that strikes me as important, I send out the intention to understand why it was shown to me. And I write it down; I've had dreams with multiple levels of information that subsequently became useful or clear at different times, including a mix of precog and "educational" material.
