They do often give you a charge or a high like drugs. The effect is often quite dramatic. We all got an energy (chi) that is synchronised with our nervous system (unprovable but very possible to experience for those with talent). Our chi and consciousness are linked. Most people got a quite closed aura and cannot get any kind of effect or experience by different minerals. They cannot experience chi.
The stones that work always have a very specific effect. I can demonstrate with a rainbow obsidian i own:

Rainbow obsidian works directly with your subconsciousness through solar plexus. It blocks all external stimuli in your aura (all feeling qualities/emotions) and makes you experience yourself as you are independent of emotions and beliefs. The purple in this stone enchances that effect. You also see green and gold. Green works with heart chakra and joy. The gold works with self esteem and recharges that from within in your subconsciousness. Rainbow obsidian also clears you of stress.
This is what someone with chi recognition and at least a somwhat open aura will experience. If you don't have talent you will get none of these effects. In the new age movement most people belive in stones because they are superstitious and get a placebo effect when they use it. Minerals do however also have a real effects that anyone with talent can experience.
