Birthdays are definitely more for the family than the object that happens to do a ++age.
I am always the most bored person at any birthday party, doesn't matter if it's my own. Everyone just uses the day as an excuse to get together and talk about stuff and eat stuff.
IMHO birthdays are meaningless. Just like any holiday it's just an excuse to slack off and waste money.
This year I decided that there'd be no celebration, but some family still showed up and I had to give up working on my project. At least I got some chocolate for the trouble...
