With my first son I realized the first birthday is more a celebration for the family as a whole, than just for the child. To a one-year-old, it's just another magical day in a series of magical days. We invited grandparents, aunts & uncles & a few friends (adult friends). My son was (and still is, at 15) a little overwhelmed with lots of people, so it was very brief. Being there for him was my goal, not doing some kind of celebration that didn't even take into consideration his developmental level or temperament. For us, low-key was the key!
