I just had my daughter's 1st birthday party. I took her into the party store with me to help pick out all of the decorations. She picked dogs lol and would not be swayed. She loves animals.
I made her a cake and pretty much invited over all family and a few close friends. I didn't bother trying to find other kids her age to invite over which eliminated party favors. She is too young to really care about that. We had it in the late afternoon and just had snacks. I made a really awesome slide show of pictures of her from birth til 1 year and put background music behind it. We opened presents. She was kinda overwhelmed from all of the people, but she had a good time. You can't really go wrong for a first birthday! Do whatever works for you and your family!.
