Why don't you offer an abbreviated version for free (and promotional purposes), and then if they want a full download charge them? Or, you could offer the download free if they sign-up for your mailing list. You could even create "add on's" that you charge for. Give away the e-book, but offer them another ebook on a specialized topic for a small fee. Selling ebooks is a great way to make a lot money, as people are actually willing to pay more for an ebook than a paper copy (I know, it blows my mind too).
