According to Nathaniel Branden, one of the pillars of self-esteem is accepting reality for what it is.

However, you can do something everyday that you would normally not do. This way you will get the action habit and eventually build momentum toward what you want. You will surprise yourself at what your capable of doing.

Just gettting out of the house, going to the gym, swimming is a huge step toward gaining the action habit.
