I agree with Stephen, though I don't like his wording; the first thing you need to do is make a decision whether to let him go or to help him. If you're not sure, you have to look inside yourself and find the choice.
Make that decision. There's nothing inherently wrong about either choice, in my opinion, so to me, it ultimately comes down to what you want.
