Rather than projecting yourself onto her why not just ask? (in regards to the couldn't have meant it)
I'm a firm believer in taking other people at face value OR clarifying with them what they meant. If I believe there are other motives I will question them about it. Now this way of thinking isn't necessarily true in all circumstances so people who I know are con artists or deceitful I'll do something different. For those who just fall into the category of a normal human being I prefer to seek clarification and understand them rather than assume I am somehow good enough to know what they mean.
Also if she talks to you why not just be honest about it? Is there something particularly wrong with that?
