Now, I've accepted (I think) that it's not possible for me to do that - I can't move there to that city with that person at all. Yet, the underlying overwhelming preference is still lurking there, frequently coming out when I think about taking action toward moving on in life.

I know plenty of people get their wishes for option #1 in life squashed and they go with full speed for their much less enthusiastic option #2.

So how can I?
Something different for you to try. Sit down with pen and paper (or the digital version) with no other distractions. Your purpose is to make a actionable stepped plan to get you to the city.

Write down the goal of getting to the city.

Then write down physical things you need to do and obstacles to overcome.

Whenever you mind drifts off the specific topic of moving to exactly that place, detach and gently bring your focus back to your focus. Do not go along with any other thoughts at all. It is a matter of concentration.

The purpose of your session is not to debate options, it is solely to create a moving plan. Take control of your mind, then doubt will not be allowed to enter and persist.

If you want to consider other options. Create a separate session for that.
