I've heard both accounts. One where it's your own voice in your head and one where it's a disctint other voice as if beside you.

Sure. My Guides and Benefactor all have distinct "voices", but I recognize them more from the "feeling" I get when they talk to me. Normally, I'll "hear" them aurally only in the Dreamtime, when I pray or when I Journey. When I'm simply reaching out to them from a conscious state, the communication is "muffled" like someone talking through a phone wrapped in cotton. Still clear, but a lot less distinct. I suspect that's because there's a big portion of my mind obscuring the process with things like driving.
