It really appears that we need some balance in this thread. I'm not saying there's nothing to the argument that you can't heal your own eyes, but, from what I've read (Google is your friend, folks), the person that started the modern version of this movement, Dr. William Bates, used some pretty far-out techniques and made improper use of eye testing machines to come to his conclusions and support his arguments.
This critique is pretty convincing.

Also, let's keep in mind that optometrists and the eye-care establishment in general make their living studying eyes. One should expect that they know what they're talking about. If we're going to continue this debate, we should see more than anecdotal evidence that the techniques of Dr. Bates and his followers have merit. I have yet to find such evidence.
