Relics of the past
My suggestion is that you could treat the experiences as relics of the past. Your trouble seems to stem from the inability to 'vacate' those relics and see them only from the outside.
I would suggest meditation as one approach, both of the relaxation and mindfulness type. Even some practice helps to break these old shackles.
Another approach is to immerse yourself in your new environment that you are already a part of. There is no need to avoid the old thoughts, just replace them with current challenges.
