I was waking up one morning and hearing a smattering of voices, my eyes were half opening but I was paralyzed. I decided to call out to them and said "Hello?"--noticing that my mouth was not moving, but that I was starting from the same part of my consciousness from which I motivate speech.
The voices called back at me, and were curious (a la "hey, someone can hear us!"). I tried to strike up a conversation with them, telling them my name and they expressed surprise and didn't seem evil, but they were really raspy and talking over each other. Putting a lot of effort into pseudotalking was difficult, kind of painful, and woke me all the way up.
I was disappointed and was only awake for a few moments before I started falling back asleep again. My body was once again frozen, and the babble resumed. After having been awake a little while and considering the dangers, I realized there was a scary component to it--namely, what if I started hearing those voices all the time and couldn't silence them. It might be an unbearable situation.
Still, I prefer experimentation to not knowing. Oliver Sacks and others document cases of people who are blind suddenly being able to see and finding it overwhelming. Then again, they can close their eyes or wear a blindfold if they want to go back...this isn't a matter of being able to cover your ears.
