Default Online Lists, Storage

What online resources do you use for keeping things like grocery lists, to-do lists, etc. Or do you use an online storage service that lets you save documents and access them from wherever. Also be nice to have a place to store a few important things (securely) like a scan of my insurance policy - in case the house burns down.

I've tried several less-than-optimal systems - such as writing down things on a post-it note and hoping those things make it home and onto the main list - or keeping electronic docs saved on a key drive and bringing it back and forth (unless I forget to - which seems to only be when I really need it) between work and home.

Looking for something simple & preferably free
