Intend a successful career development discussion with your supervisor. Tell him your goal is to advance within the company and ask him what areas he feels you need to focus in order to set you up for a promotion. As a manager this is part of his job to develop his stars. Be the star, you don't have to kiss butt or anything.
When I've been bored in positions, I've looked at my skills and where I can improve them and told the right people my goals - this landed promotions.
