Default Does IM work at the office?

Of course the answer is "yes", but I wonder, are the expectations of what your day is going to be like, so strong that IM "turns off" from 8-5? On evenings, weekends, and during my lunch break, I notice things happening/synkros at a level that doesn't tend to happen during the normal day. Yeah there have been several times where people have started discussing what was on my mind, etc, and I "expect" that to happen.

But the roles and expectations at a work-place are so defined.

People's personalities, their ego-identification with their job title, the long-held grudges (maybe towards you or not), the years-old bad practices. How could you IM your way out of that without totally changing environments and saying goodbye? If your hands are tied in a political atmosphere, isn't that by design?

A common piece of wisdom is "accept the things you cannot change" yet IM says (talking abraham here), we can make it so only good things come to us usually. I mean, we're supposed to not try to change people. Yet for a lot of folks, they can only be successful at work or happy, if other people DO change. So WE have to change.

Thoughts?
