You need permission for commercial use, which strictly speaking includes a site that profits from AdSense. It's best to err on the side of caution with these things, so I would just shoot the photographer an e-mail or find another picture.
You don't need to contact the author for the attribution part of the license, although I am sure he or she will appreciate it. You do need to put something like 'Photo by Author' in your article somewhere.
