From what I have studied, in past ages when our ancestors were hunter/gatherers there would have been a deep connection to the rhythms and cycles of earth, and a possible intuitive knowing that each animal and plant played a role in the balance of nature. It doesn't take much to look about us and see how we as humans (with the ability to self reflect) have dramatically changed the face of the earth and the interdependence of all creatures.
We are at the top of the food chain. In a broad sense we feel we have choice. As humans we have a great tapestry of diversity of thought leading to what we deem as right and wrong.
As regard the production of food, those people on the planet who are becoming more conscious will question the ethics of certain types of farming and animal rights. Many people already live their lives with sensitivity toward all beings, knowing that they are not separate; that each one is playing their part in this great Totality whether they eat meat or vegetables.
While humans experience the extremes of the emotional wave that this world runs on we will judge and condemn others whether they are carnivores, or vegans, or vegetarians.
I believe as each one of us lives with an intention of inner peace and harmony we will take a different approach to caring for ourselves and the earth and its creatures and plants. It then becomes possible to live in integrity, kindness and compassion for all things whether animate or inanimate. |
