I think it's just a matter of being curious. Edison had a 10000 item todo list of different experiments. Every experiment was a success as it cleared one item off hat todo list.
There was no failures, there was 10.000 successes. I bet he was never sad until he found the experiment that worked and thought "Damn, it works. What the hell am I gonna do now?"
As long as you learn something, no matter how insignificant, you're still moving forward. You could see an athlete training his whole life and never beat the world record. Why does he keep training? Because he's learning and improving every day. You can choose to see every day as a failure but that's just stupid.
