It's probably too late to have an impact, but here's what I think.

This is exactly what I was thinking. When I was a web scripter, I was doing a little design. I think I put together a whole bunch of blue and red. My boss said it looked terrible, and she was right; she told me never to mix primary colors. So I think the blue+red, especially as backgrounds, is going to look bad. I actually prefer the blue+green design proposed. I also like the people in the background and wish that was less subtle. It kind of evokes "a movement" and that's typically going to make people curious.
In any case, it's probably going to be more important to have a "hook" than to perfect the design. Something that really grabs people, whether it is because they think the cover is bogus or because it really moves them. Here, I think the huge
SMART PEOPLE is going to do that, the bigger the better. The whole smart people idea is a snarky hook Steve has used to reel people in on the blog, so it makes sense to highlight it on the cover.
