In the fitness world, breaking out of your comfort zone is needed when you hit a plateau (when you don't make any progress). This can be: do something more, or do something less, but in any case: change something.
To keep control over your progress, don't force anything and change only one thing at a time.
I believe this is a good rule for personal development too.
