There are no 'rules' as such - if it works for you, keep doing it and let everyone else know so we can all try whatever it is

Select the sleep start times and lengths, and stick to them as much as you can. If you oversleep, miss a nap or have to alter the times at all; don't worry - it happens to everyone. However, the more consistent you are (both with starting times and sleep length), the easier it will be for your body to get used to it.
As for the 'cold turkey' approach, personally I prefer this method to others for most things; but not everyone is the same. When it comes to the biphasic sleeping though, there isn't really a way of working up to it - you just change from sleeping once per day to sleeping twice.
