Probably dreaming is the best analogy. When you dream, you see through the point of view of the viewpoint character but all the people and surroundings you interact with are also occurring in your (sleeping) head. They're all part of the sleeping you, but they're
not part of the viewpoint character.

They're all aspects of "sleeping you". No more real or unreal than the viewpoint character you choose to inhabit.
