I think the core of the issue runs much, much deeper than this. In fact, I'd be willing to wager that even if 30 million Mexicans immigrated LEGALLY, people would be equally worried. Just a feeling in my bones...

Now, I can't judge any particular person responding here, but in general the discussion does follow a remarkably similar pattern. Everyone keeps insisting it's all about the legal status -- if only immigrants were funneled through the proper channels, we would stop complaining, promise!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Few people genuinely care whether they went through rigorous system checks or not, or even about fiscal losses (although I agree that's a problem). People care more about the demographic metamorphosis in their country. The entire social texture and cultural heritage of the US is undergoing a monumental transformation, and a rapid one at that. People are in their full right to worry about that, without being called "racist" or "elitist". If people are worried that whites will become a minority (which they will), then it should be said out loud, not locked up in that little box at the back of our head with all the other "thought crimes" we refuse to touch with six-foot poles. It's not healthy, and it's not rational.

I think if we started calling the spade a spade, this discussion would take on a whole different character.
