I believe that to do otherwise is bad. When you do things for the world, you expect things back from the world. So you're imposing your own image on a world that may not want it. I know that I dislike it when somebody tries to tell me what to do "for my own benefit."
I believe that you should ask things only of yourself. Perhaps you are asking yourself to ask the world for something, but then you have full control because only you can stop yourself from performing the action necessary to fulfill your desires. Instead of needing the world to give you what you are asking for, you instead only need yourself to ask for it to fulfill your desire. Your desire was the seeking, not what was sought. External factors can prevent you from gaining what you seek, but they cannot stop you from seeking it in the first place.
