Do you think Jesus acted selflessly to get into heaven, or be recognized as an "advanced soul", or to feel good about himself, or to impress the hot new-age chick?
I don't know what is more disturbing - the fact that people are afraid to call a spade a spade and still love the spade, or the fact that so many people have such a hard time with the concept of conscience.
Conscience is not logical. It is not a belief system.
Why do I try to follow my conscience? I cannot give a _truly true_ answer in words. It is beyond words because it goes beyond physical reality. There is no logical concept that will avail us here.
There is also no rulebook and you're right that labels don't matter.
