My operating system is in a state of flux at the moment. When I started my role a year ago I was able to use a purely electronic system and I was able to get away with not using a WIP area/tray as most of my tasks were things I did not need to wait for someone else's input for me to finish.
Now I am finding I need to switch to a paper and electronic system and will be needing a tray.
Currently I have an in tray and a filing tray, both are overflowing and my desk (3meters x 2meters) is on average about an inch deep in WIP with a 1 meter square clear spot for my laptop.
I am going to make use of a drawer I have in my desk built for hanging files as my WIP area (just need to put a handle on it to make it easier to open)
I mainly need to stop putting fires out, just turn the fire hoses off for a couple of hours and clean up. It's just too tempting to keep putting those fires out instead of setting things up.
Thanks so much for the link. I had a quick read through and it fit perfectly with what I had envisaged. So now someone else has so kindly recorded my vision for me to refer back to while implementing it.
