I wholeheartedly agree with what Mato says here and Erin said in her blog that dream symbolism is best interpreted by the individual dreamer. And will add that developing the ability to make accurate, meaningful interpretations may take some practice.
If you are just beginning to study your dreams, a dream dictionary may be helpful as a jumping-off point of possible interpretations. You would have to keep in mind that it is not a definitive guide and run every description through your own personal filter. Is it true for you? Does that symbol translate in that manner in your life?
For example, snakes are sometimes depicted in dream dictionaries as symbolic of transformation or knowledge. However, in my reality, having had many fearful and traumatic experiences involving snakes, I do not see them that way at all. So a snake showing up in my dream will mean something very different.
The other most important factor in dream interpretation in my opinion is how you feel about the dream. How did you feel when you had this dream? Identifying the emotion evoked helps a great deal.
Keep a log of your dreams and your impressions of what they mean. And have fun with it!
