Rockchick, do you meditate before you go to sleep? Sometimes you have to quiet the chatter in order to go deep.
Another thing I used to do, and this is going to sound crazy, I used to ask the Dream Master to send me a clear, timely, inspiring dream, or whatever I was looking for that night. I always got what I asked for. Not sure if it was the placebo effect but it always worked. Don't ask me who the Dream Master is... just learned about him in junior high and went with it.
