Social upheavals and plagues have happened many, many times through history. Destructive events are part of nature. For example, periodic forest fires and floods allow for new and more diverse growth in a given topography.
Any major social upheaval or plague nowadays would probably make many, many people think that we were seeing the end of the world. But that doesn't mean it would actually be the end of the world.
Earth's population is around 6.5 billion right now. A hundred years ago the world population was 1.6 billion. Even a dramatic loss tomorrow of 90% of the world's population would still leave us with 650 million people. This would hardly be the end of the world, in fact, the population would simply be what it was 300 years ago.
